The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Steven Chumi, held talks with the Ambassador of Cuba to Tanzania, Yordenis Despaigne Vera, at the Ministry’s sub-offices in Dar es Salaam, focusing on strategies to advance and strengthen diplomatic cooperation between Tanzania and the Republic of Cuba, for the mutual benefit of their citizens.
During the meeting, Deputy Minister Chumi noted that the relationship between Tanzania and Cuba has continued to grow, particularly in the sectors of health, education, industry, and diplomacy, emphasizing the importance of establishing concrete strategies to further enhance the partnership.
“Tanzania has benefited from Cuban volunteer doctors, scholarships for our students in medical and science fields, and the establishment of a pesticide manufacturing plant in Kibaha, Coast Region. Additionally, Cuba has played a key role in supporting the development of the agricultural sector,” Chumi stated.
He also highlighted that both nations have been at the forefront of advocating for the rights of developing countries and promoting global solidarity.
For his part, Ambassador Yordenis Vera expressed appreciation to the Government of Tanzania for maintaining close ties with Cuba. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to expanding economic diplomacy, especially in the areas of trade, industry, technology, culture, and sports.
Tanzania and Cuba share a long-standing and brotherly relationship dating back to Africa’s liberation struggles, during which the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, and the late Fidel Castro laid a strong foundation for a partnership built on equality, solidarity, and shared development.
