Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s ambassador to the European Union, Edgar Gaspar Martins, presented on Thursday, (09) in Brussels, his Credentials to the Head of the European Council, António Costa, and to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leye.

According to a statement, the ceremony also included the accreditation of 13 other ambassadors, demonstrating the dynamism of the EU’s multilateral relations with several partner states.

The formal ceremony marks the official start of Ambassador Edgar Gaspar Martins’s duties as Angola’s representative to the European Union, reaffirming Angola’s commitment to strengthening and deepening its relations with this institution.

These relations are based on friendship, political dialogue, and multisectoral cooperation.

On the occasion, the ambassador emphasized the strategic importance of the Angola-European Union partnership, highlighting the latter’s role as a privileged partner in sustainable development, economic diversification, and investment in key sectors for Angola’s future.

The E.U officilas expressed the institution’s equal desire to continue working with the Angolan State on projects that benefit both sides and encourage sustainable practices in their partnership based on common interests.

In a week marked by bilateral meetings between the Angolan Diplomatic Mission and European Union (EU) institutions, Ambassador Edgar Gaspar Martins participated in a technical meeting with EU External Services officials on Sept 8th.

The meeting aimed to define common ground for preparations for the 7th African Union (AU)-European Union (EU) Summit, scheduled for Nov 24th and 25th in Luanda.

Before the meeting, the diplomat was received by the Director for Africa of the EU External Services, Patricia Llombart, who thanked the Angolan Government for its willingness to host the event.

The official highlighted the positive dynamics of relations between Angola and the European Union, evidenced by bilateral and ministerial meetings with results considered positive.

According to Patricia Llombart, despite the current international context marked by political tensions, including the war between Russia and Ukraine, the crisis in Gaza and the Middle East, as well as the instability in relations between China and the United States, the AU-EU Summit represents an opportunity to convey a joint message in defense of multilateralism.

Ambassador Edgar Gaspar Martins, in turn, recognized the EU’s openness and willingness to participate as factors in strengthening relations, emphasizing the expectation that the summit will consider African challenges from a sustainable development perspective.

The diplomat also highlighted priority areas of cooperation, such as the Lobito Corridor, which already has European investment of over €600 million, and the agricultural sector, where Angola seeks greater technological and human support, essential for food security and inclusive economic growth.
