Ministry of Interior Implements Road Safety Program

Africa-Press – Angola. The Ministry of the Interior is implementing, starting Thursday (11), the national road safety program dubbed “Roads Without Deaths,” as part of the fight against accidents in the country.

According to a press release on Wednesday (10), the campaign’s opening ceremony takes place in Luanda, under the guidance of the Minister of the Interior, Manuel Homem.

The initiative’s motto is “change before it’s too late” and aims to reduce the number of accidents with fatalities and injuries, reinforce police presence and enforcement in critical areas, and raise awareness of risky behavior.

It will pay special attention to speeding, driving while intoxicated (DWI), cell phone use, and overcrowding vehicles, among other measures.

The program will also improve technical vehicle inspections, train and improve police morale, focusing on public order and traffic enforcement, and strengthen internal control over enforcement officers themselves.

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, traffic accidents represent the second leading cause of death in the country, with an annual average of 3,120 deaths, equivalent to 9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

For the Ministry, this situation constitutes a public health and national security crisis, on the verge of becoming endemic.

Among the most significant human factors are speeding, DWI, cell phone use while driving, irregular motorcycle taxis, especially without helmets and traveling in the opposite direction, pedestrian crossings in inappropriate places, and irregular transportation of passengers and goods.

In the technical domain, the main issue involves the poor condition of vehicles, the identification of 411 accident hotspots, and poor vertical and horizontal road signage.
