Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Embassy in Rwanda marked the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence with a series of initiatives that reaffirmed the patriotic pride, cultural diversity and the strengthening of relations between both countries.

The commemorations started on November 08th with a five-a-side soccer competition with four teams, namely Angola A, Angola B, Kenya and the UN Office in Kigali. The tournament was won by Kenya.

The high point was on Friday (14) during the official reception offered by the Angolan ambassador, Alfredo Dombe, and attended by members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Rwanda Government, economic operators, academics, members of the Angolan community, and several guests.

At night the participants were enlivened by the Angolan band Nostalgia.

In his address, ambassador Alfredo Dombe laid out the main advances made by Angola in the past fifty years, stressing continuous investments in human capital, with special emphasis on the sectors of health, education, and social impact infrastructures.

The diplomat reminded that to celebrate the independence means to renovate the compromise with the values that sustain the country, such as peace, labour, solidarity and development.

He also underlined the focus on economic diversification and the reinforcement of co-operation with African countries.

The ceremony was attended by the Permanent Secretary at Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Clementine Mukeka, who saluted Angolans and deemed the independence a landmark conquered with determination and unity.

She also stressed that the continent is going through a crucial moment, marked by the pro-tempore presidency of the African Union (A.U) by the angolan leader, João Lourenço, at a period that the continent seeks to reinforce stability, integration and development.

Ms Mukeka highlghted also the importance of the A.U/E.U summit, scheduled to happen in Luanda, having equally stressed the role of Angola in the defence of African priorities.
