BNA develops solution for debit card use in SADC

Africa-Press – Angola. The National Bank of Angola (BNA) is developing a solution that will allow the use of the debit card in the countries of the SADC region, and in other economies with an international payment system.

The debit card is associated with the current account, which allows withdrawals, payments for various services and various consultation operations in the multicaixa network.

According to the governor of the Central Bank, José de Lima Massano, technical teams continue to work so that the Kwanza can be used as a payment currency in the region.

“In the member countries, at a technical level, there is a positive feeling”, said Lima Massano, who was speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the 56th Meeting of the Committee of Governors of Central Banks (CCBG) of SADC, which took place from 10 to 12 of this month in the Angolan capital.

Lima Massano reiterated that they continue to work towards facilitating transactions with the instruments that the market already has, such as debit, as he mentioned in the last conversation he had with his counterpart in Namibia.

“Concretely, the solution we are developing will not only allow debit cards to be used in the region, but in any other economy where the international payment system works”, said Lima Massano, who hosted the Meeting of the CCBG for the third time.

Adding that, there is a path that the Bank has been taking and continues to work on this path.

“(…) We expect soon to be able to announce what has already been done in a concrete way, and citizens to take advantage of this benefit”, he advanced.

Everything indicates that the circulation of Kwanza, via debit card, starts with the neighboring Republic of Namibia and then continues to other countries in the region.

With the neighboring country, in February this year, Banco Nacional de Angola (BNA) and the Central Bank of Namibia initialed a Memorandum of Reinforcement of Cooperation, which served to solidify the understanding between the two institutions in matters related to their operation, with inclusion of topics related to the control of financial flows between the two countries, within the framework of improving the business environment.

The document was signed by the governor of the BNA, José de Lima Massano and his Namibian counterpart, Johannes Gawaxab.
