ECOWAS Avoids Condemning US Attack on Venezuela.

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) today recognized the right of states to combat international crime and avoided directly condemning the US attack on Venezuela.

In a statement, the organization called for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Venezuela, as enshrined in international law, especially in the Charter of the United Nations.

The 12-member African regional bloc also said it fully supports the African Union (AU) statement calling for restraint and inclusive dialogue with the Venezuelan people.

The African Union also avoided directly condemning the US aggression, although it called for respect for the international order and stated that Venezuela’s internal problems should be resolved through dialogue.

On the other hand, other African countries reacted to Washington’s attack, such as South Africa, which declared that the actions undermined the principle of equality among nations.

For the Government of Ghana, the US attack evoked the colonial and imperialist era and establishes “a dangerous precedent” for the world order. Meanwhile, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto stated via social media that he had received messages of support from Angola, Namibia, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Chad, Niger, Gambia, and Burundi.

On Saturday, US military forces successfully carried out an attack against Venezuela, capturing the country’s President, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Congresswoman Cilia Flores.

Maduro and Flores were transferred to the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center in New York City, United States, and are scheduled to appear in court today for the first time, where they will face several charges related to drug trafficking and corruption.
