Africa. A politician in Namibia—gaining global attention due to his name, which matches that of the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler—is poised to win local elections tomorrow, Wednesday, maintaining his seat in the north of the country after previously securing 85% of the votes in 2020.
It is widely expected that Adolf Hitler Onuna, a 59-year-old member of the SWAPO party, will retain his seat, as preliminary forecasts from the electoral authority indicate a clear victory.
Onuna gained international prominence in 2020 when he won a seat in the Ombondja constituency with 85% of the votes, achieving 1,196 votes compared to 213 for his opponent. At that time, the number of registered voters in the constituency was only 2,520, making his victory decisive.
Despite his ongoing political career, global interest in Onuna has largely stemmed from his name, which is identical to that of the German dictator responsible for some of history’s worst crimes.
In an interview with a German newspaper in 2020, this Namibian politician asserted that he has no connection to Nazi ideology, stating, “I have nothing to do with it at all,” explaining that his father may not have understood what Adolf Hitler represented. “When I was young, I considered it a perfectly normal name. I did not understand that this man wanted to conquer the whole world until I grew up. I have no connection to any of these matters.”
His wife calls him Adolf, but he typically avoids mentioning Hitler in public. Nevertheless, he insists on not changing his name. It is recorded in all official documents, and he remarked to the newspaper that it is “too late” to change it.
As a former German colony, Namibia still bears many German place names, and traditional names like Adolf are common.
In 2020, a car was spotted in Onuna’s hometown bearing the name “Adolf Hitler,” accompanied by a Nazi swastika on its rear window.
However, Onuna denied that this vehicle was his and rejected any connection to this bizarre stunt.
Namibia, a former German colony, has a complex history that includes the legacy of German colonialism. The country retains many German place names and cultural influences, which can lead to unique situations, such as the case of Adolf Hitler Onuna, a politician whose name has sparked international curiosity. His electoral success highlights the intersection of history and contemporary politics in Namibia, where names carry significant weight and implications.
The political landscape in Namibia is shaped by its colonial past and the ongoing influence of the SWAPO party, which has been dominant since independence. The name Adolf Hitler, while controversial, has not hindered Onuna’s political.
