Africa. Two Chadian soldiers were killed and another seriously injured in a drone strike on a military camp near the Sudan border. The attack occurred on Friday morning and involved a drone reportedly coming from Sudan. Local authorities are investigating the source of the drone, while the area remains a transit point for Sudanese refugees amid ongoing humanitarian challenges.
Hamit Hassan, the governor of the province that includes the border town of Tina, confirmed the fatalities but noted he had no information about the perpetrator. A military intelligence officer, who requested anonymity due to not having permission to speak publicly, stated that the drone originated from Sudanese territory, but it remains unclear whether it was launched by the Sudanese army or the Rapid Support Forces.
He explained, “We are still verifying the source of this drone, and if it is confirmed to be Sudanese military, we will exercise our right to respond.”
The officer added that the air force base in the eastern Chadian city of Abéché is on high alert, and ground reinforcements have already been sent to Tina. No comments have been made by the Sudanese army or the Rapid Support Forces regarding the incident.
Tina serves as a transit point for Sudanese refugees before they are moved to safer camps within Chad. However, humanitarian sources indicate that funding shortages for water, sanitation, and shelter in these camps are slowing resettlement efforts. According to the International Rescue Committee, the ongoing war in Sudan has displaced over 12 million people to date.
The conflict in Sudan has led to significant instability in the region, with ongoing violence causing mass displacement. Over 12 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to the fighting, creating a humanitarian crisis that affects neighboring countries like Chad. The border area has become a focal point for military tensions and refugee movements, complicating the security situation further.
Chad has historically faced challenges related to its borders with Sudan, often dealing with spillover effects from conflicts. The recent drone attack highlights the fragile security environment, as both countries navigate complex relationships amid ongoing unrest.
