These sentences come as part of a broad anti-corruption campaign led by the military council under Ibrahim Traore, who came to power in 2022. The leaders of the coup claim to draw inspiration from the late President Thomas Sankara, who made fighting corruption a fundamental pillar of his political project in Burkina Faso before his assassination in 1987. However, this campaign, while praised by supporters of the regime, faces criticism from human rights organizations that accuse the authorities of using the anti-corruption banner to suppress dissenting voices.
