Africa-Press. Somali authorities announced the death of at least 28 members of Al-Shabaab, linked to al-Qaeda, during a series of military and security operations carried out by government forces in several regions of central and southern Somalia.
The operations targeted sites and gatherings of the group in regions experiencing intense militant activity, and also resulted in the destruction of vehicles and military equipment used by the organization to carry out its attacks.
Security officials confirmed that the operations are part of an ongoing campaign conducted by the Somali armed forces with support from local forces and international partners, aimed at reducing the capabilities of Al-Shabaab and reclaiming areas still under its influence.
These developments come at a time when Somalia is seeking to enhance security stability alongside the deployment of the African Union mission for support and stabilization in Somalia, amid increasing calls for sustainable international funding to support counter-terrorism efforts and build state institutions.
