Africa-Press. Senegal and the European Union announced new steps to strengthen a comprehensive strategic partnership focused on migration, security, and development, following a visit by European commissioners to Dakar on March 2–3, 2026.
Talks between Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and members of his government with European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela and European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner addressed maritime security, the fight against illegal fishing, migration management, and boosting investments through the “Global Gateway” initiative.
The European delegation visited several Senegalese programs and projects, including the “Second Joint Program” and the “Regional Express Train.” Eleven new boats and six refurbished vessels were also handed over to the police and gendarmerie, alongside the inauguration of a maritime maintenance center at the Port of Dakar, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s capacity to combat organized crime and illicit trafficking.
The joint statement stressed the need to intensify cooperation in combating irregular migration, develop readmission mechanisms, and encourage legal migration. The European Union also welcomed measures announced by President Faye to strengthen oversight of the fishing sector, implement biological rest periods, and create job opportunities for youth through value chains linked to fisheries resources.
