Africa-Press. French national team star Kylian Mbappe has stirred controversy while discussing the upcoming match between his team and Senegal in the 2026 World Cup, as he touched on the ongoing debate regarding the identity of the African champion.

The French team is set to face Senegal on Tuesday, June 16, marking the start of their campaign in the tournament. Mbappe spoke about the difficulty of the match and the importance of a strong start in the World Cup.

The French striker stated in comments to a local source: “It is good to start the tournament against Senegal; they are the African champions, or maybe I don’t know if it is them or Morocco, so we will try to stay away from that issue.”

Mbappe quickly retracted his description of Senegal as the continental champion, referring to the case currently before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which Senegal filed in March regarding a dispute over the continental title, with a final decision expected soon.

The Moroccan Football Federation had submitted a request to its African counterpart, asking for the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final to be awarded to them following the withdrawal of Senegalese players after a penalty was awarded to the Moroccan team in the dying moments of the match. As a result, Senegal was stripped of the title by an administrative ruling from the African Union, and the title was awarded to Morocco.

In another context, Mbappe confirmed in the same interview that facing Argentina will not represent “an obsession for the French team” following their loss in the 2022 World Cup final, praising current coach Didier Deschamps and his leadership style.
