Africa. Botswana is set to open an embassy in Moscow and is inviting Russian investors to collaborate in the rare minerals and diamond sectors, according to the Foreign Minister.

The Russian news agency TASS reported that Botswana plans to open its embassy in Moscow soon and has called on Russian investors to cooperate in the rare minerals and diamond fields.

Russia seeks to enhance its influence in Africa amid escalating tensions with the West. TASS quoted Botswana’s Foreign Minister, Phenyoo Butale, stating, “We firmly believe that Botswana is the best place for investment, given its political and economic stability. Therefore, we strongly encourage Russian investors to come to Botswana.”

Diamonds typically contribute about one-third of Botswana’s national revenue and three-quarters of its foreign exchange earnings. In 2021, Russian company Norilsk Nickel (GMKN.MM), the largest producer of palladium and high-quality nickel in the world, settled a dispute with the Botswana government.

Botswana has a rich history of diamond mining, which significantly contributes to its national revenue. The country has maintained a stable political environment, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment. In recent years, Botswana has sought to diversify its economy beyond diamonds, looking to strengthen partnerships with countries like Russia to enhance its mining sector.
