A research team led by a local university and a French institute has uncovered a complex water management system next to the Red Pyramid in Dahshur, dating back approximately 4,600 years.
The study published in a scientific journal indicates that the ancient Egyptians employed advanced techniques to control water to support massive construction projects.
The newly discovered evidence consists of two large structures buried beneath the sand, extending across the Dahshur valley in the form of earthen and stone dams, which were part of an integrated hydraulic network, according to a local source.
According to the researchers, these structures date back to the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu (circa 2613–2589 BC). If this discovery is confirmed, it could rewrite the traditional understanding of how the ancient Egyptians built their pyramids.
In 1843, two mysterious structures were observed in the Dahshur valley, just 40 meters from the Red Pyramid. For over a century, scientists believed they were merely slopes or paths for transporting stones from quarries. However, thanks to modern technology, the team utilized satellite images, historical maps, terrain models, and water flow analysis to reveal that these structures are not ordinary pathways.
Each structure measures approximately 600-700 meters in length, 15-30 meters in width, and 6-7 meters in height, with about 200 meters separating them. Notably, their “serpentine” shape in the middle is a design that makes little sense for pathways but is ideal for draining floodwaters.
The discovered system includes two dams, a reservoir with a capacity of about 61 million gallons, a diversion channel, and what may be the oldest known advanced triangular filter in ancient Egypt. This system was designed to take advantage of seasonal rainfall and sudden floods that affected the area during the Old Kingdom, when the climate was wetter than it is today.
Structures That May Have Been Used for Heavy Load Transport
Researchers believe that the controlled water may have assisted in transporting heavy loads near the pyramid, providing workers with water, preparing mortar, and protecting the construction site from violent floods.
According to the research team, this dam was not similar to modern concrete dams but was likely a wide bridge made of earth, marl (a type of clay rock), rubble, and stone, with stone protection on the water-exposed parts. The most intriguing part of the system is the triangular filter shaped like a “duck’s bill” in the middle of the western dam, designed to safely drain large amounts of water to prevent dam collapse.
Engineering calculations indicate that this filter could drain more than double the amount of water that a straight filter could handle, highlighting exceptional engineering ingenuity.
Researchers believe this system enabled the ancient Egyptians to:
– Store millions of gallons of rainwater and floodwaters.
– Control incoming floodwaters to the area.
– Direct water to the pyramid construction site to assist in transporting massive stone blocks, providing water for workers, and preparing mortar.
Scientists suggest that these advanced techniques may have resulted from previous experiments, as the famous “Kafara” dam—one of the oldest dams in the world—is located less than 12 miles from Dahshur and was destroyed by an ancient flood due to insufficient filtering.
The study raises the possibility that the engineers of the Red Pyramid learned from the failure of that dam and applied improvements in their design to avoid repeating the disaster.
If this theory is confirmed through archaeological excavations, it would provide evidence that the ancient Egyptians possessed advanced engineering knowledge in water management thousands of years ago and used these techniques to assist in transporting heavy stones, supplying water to workers, preparing mortar, and protecting the construction site from destructive floods.
However, scientists emphasize that these conclusions remain unproven theories, as the structures have not undergone any archaeological excavations to date, with most of the site located within a restricted military area. Additionally, some skeptics question this hypothesis because the discovered channel is situated 130 feet above the Nile Valley, meaning boats could not sail directly from the river to the pyramid, and slopes would still be needed to lift materials.
The question remains whether these formations were built before, during, or centuries after the construction of the Red Pyramid, and the answer requires precise excavations to uncover the engineering cores of the dams, or dateable building materials, or water deposits that confirm the dam theory.
Nonetheless, this discovery opens a new door to understanding water engineering in ancient Egypt and provides compelling evidence that pyramid construction was not merely a monumental physical effort but was supported by advanced engineering knowledge that transformed the challenges of the desert environment into useful resources.
