Africa-Press. The Chadian army announced the death of 23 soldiers in an attack carried out by Boko Haram. The army stated in a report that Boko Haram militants attacked a military base in Chad, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 security personnel and injuring 26 others.

The report clarified that armed individuals stormed a military site on Baraka Tolorom Island around 10 PM on Monday, leading to intense clashes with regular forces. The army added that it managed to repel the attack that occurred on Monday night in the Lake Chad area, and operations to secure the region are ongoing.

In a related context, a nearby village to the attack site experienced arson and looting, with no confirmed information available yet regarding civilian casualties. It was also decided to temporarily suspend the activities of non-governmental organizations in the area due to the deteriorating security situation.

The Chadian president praised the soldiers who fell in the attack, describing them as “heroes” and offering his condolences to their families. He stated in a post on his social media page: “In the face of brutality, Chad remains resilient, united, and unwavering. Darkness will never triumph over the republic.” He also visited the injured soldiers returning to the capital N’Djamena this morning.

This attack comes amid escalating security threats facing Chad in the Lake Chad region, where armed groups, including Boko Haram, are continuously active.

A previous attack on the “Bohoma” camp in March 2020 resulted in the deaths of around 100 Chadian soldiers, while another attack in October 2024 led to the deaths of nearly 40 individuals.

Boko Haram has expanded its influence since 2009 from northeastern Nigeria to western Chad, where attacks on military installations have become frequent.
