Burkina Faso Bans French Channel for Promoting Terrorism

Africa-Press. The High Council for Communications announced that the military regime in Burkina Faso has banned the broadcasting of the French channel TV5 Monde, accusing it of “misleading” and “promoting terrorism” in its coverage of violence in the country and neighboring Mali.

TV5 Monde’s broadcast had been temporarily suspended twice, in April and June 2024. The head of the council stated in a statement: “The High Council for Communications has decided, under a decision issued on May 5, to ban the broadcasting of TV5 Monde programs in Burkina Faso.”

He explained: “This decision comes after discovering numerous violations of the law, ethics, and professional standards in covering topics related to counter-terrorism in Burkina Faso, and the news surrounding the terrorist attacks that occurred on April 25, 2026, in Mali.”

He added: “The errors noted, which included misleading information and glorification of terrorism, were observed in several episodes of the television news program during April and May 2026.”

It is worth mentioning that TV5 Monde had been suspended in Mali, which is also under military rule, in May 2025, and the suspension continued “until further notice,” after the military accused it of bias in covering an opposition protest. The channel had previously been suspended for three months by the military council in 2024.
