Burkina Faso Parliament Approves Dissolution of Parties

Africa-Press. The transitional parliament of Burkina Faso unanimously approved a bill that fully repeals the charter of political parties, along with laws regulating party financing, election campaign funding, and the status of the opposition. The government described the move as a preliminary step toward a comprehensive restructuring of national political life.

The decision formally enacts the dissolution of political parties whose activities had been suspended since September 2022. Lawmakers said the new law aims to radically reorganize the political landscape, in line with the government’s view that the previous party system contributed to deepening social divisions.

Territorial Administration Minister Émile Zerbo said the “party system” had fragmented Burkinabè society, describing the legislation as a “necessary reform” to rebuild political life on new foundations.

The move has drawn broad political criticism. Analysts argue that abolishing the party framework represents a “serious setback” to political gains achieved since the 2014 popular uprising, warning it could “silence dissenting voices” and undermine the continuation of democratic practice.
