Burkina Faso has commenced construction of its first highway, a 332-kilometer route connecting the capital, Ouagadougou, to the southwestern city of Bobo Dioulasso. This initiative, part of the “Faso Mibo” project, aims to modernize the country’s infrastructure and enhance economic integration within the region.

Africa. The ruling military leader of Burkina Faso, General Ibrahim Traoré, has initiated the construction of the country’s first highway, extending approximately 332 kilometers to connect the capital, Ouagadougou, with the southwestern city of Bobo Dioulasso.

This project, inaugurated near the capital, is part of the “Faso Mibo” initiative, an ambitious plan to modernize the infrastructure in the Sahel region.

Authorities confirm that the allocated funding, amounting to about $357 million in the 2026 budget, relies on local resources, aiming to enhance self-reliance.

Observers believe that the highway will represent a significant shift in transportation and trade, as it will facilitate the flow of traffic along the vital corridor connecting the ports of Abidjan, Lomé, Tema, and Cotonou with landlocked Sahel countries.

The project is expected to contribute to regional economic integration, alleviate pressure on existing road networks, and support government plans to address the developmental and security challenges facing the country.

Burkina Faso, located in West Africa, has faced numerous challenges in developing its infrastructure due to limited resources and ongoing security issues. The launch of this highway is part of a broader strategy to improve transportation networks and stimulate economic growth in the region. Historically, the country has relied on external funding for infrastructure projects, but recent efforts aim to increase self-reliance through local financing.
