Africa. Three crew members of a cargo plane were killed after the aircraft crashed while transporting food aid to flood victims in Unity State, a resource-rich area in northern South Sudan.

Bikram Rai, Deputy Director of Samaritan’s Purse in South Sudan, stated that the plane, carrying approximately two tons of food supplies, took off from the capital, Juba, heading towards the town of Leer before crashing about 20 kilometers from the airstrip.

“With deep sadness, we confirm that all three crew members have lost their lives,” he added.

The aircraft belonged to the local company Nari Air, which provides cargo and charter services within the country, and no official comment has been made by the company yet. Details regarding the type of aircraft or the cause of the crash remain unknown.

Humanitarian and Security Context

This incident occurs at a time when South Sudan is experiencing recurring humanitarian crises due to floods and conflicts, with thousands of displaced individuals relying on international aid for access to food and medicine.

Unity State is one of the most sensitive areas, combining oil wealth with its border location with Sudan, making it susceptible to security and political tensions. Humanitarian organizations report that difficulties in accessing affected areas due to poor infrastructure make air transport a vital option for delivering aid, which increases risks in a country struggling with weak oversight of aviation safety standards.

South Sudan has faced persistent humanitarian crises due to flooding and ongoing conflicts, leading to a reliance on international aid for food and medical supplies. Unity State, rich in oil, is particularly vulnerable due to its geographical location and the tensions that arise from its resources. The challenges of accessing affected areas due to poor infrastructure make air transport a critical, albeit risky, option for delivering aid in this fragile context.

The local airline involved, Nari Air, has not yet commented on the incident, and details regarding the aircraft type or the cause of the crash remain unclear.
