Africa-Press. A joint statement from several countries and international and regional organizations affirmed their commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan, expressing concern over the “devastating” humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict since 2023.
The statement included the governments of the United States, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, and the United Kingdom, as well as the African Union, the European Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the Arab League, and the United Nations.
The joint statement was issued following the conclusion of consultations by the International Five-Power Group on Sudan (which includes the African Union, the United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League, and IGAD) with Sudanese political forces in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, from June 3 to 5, continuing from the Sudan conference hosted in Berlin last April.
The governments and organizations reaffirmed their “shared and steadfast commitment to the people of Sudan and to a peaceful, democratic, and stable future for the country, as well as to the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan.” They expressed “grave concern over the devastating humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict, as millions face the risk of displacement, acute food insecurity, and limited access to essential services, while attacks on civilians and infrastructure continue.”
They added, “We stand united in our belief that there is no military solution to this crisis, and that any sustainable solution must be based on an inclusive political process led by civilians that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.” They highlighted the support of countries and international and regional organizations for the urgent preparations of the Five-Power Committee and the initiation of an inclusive dialogue process led by Sudanese civilians in the coming weeks.
The statement also called for the results of the dialogue to lead to “a clear path towards a transition to an independent civilian government based on legitimacy, accountability, and respect for human rights, reflecting the aspirations of citizens in building a democratic state based on participation, legitimacy, and the rule of law.”
Last month, the head of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, revealed ongoing arrangements to launch an inclusive political dialogue aimed at reaching a national consensus on the future of the country.
