Africa-Press. Guinea-Bissau opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira is scheduled to appear before a military court on February 13 over allegations linked to past coup attempts, according to judicial and military sources.
Sources close to the court, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said Pereira faces “serious suspicions” of involvement in activities described as “subversive acts.” A senior army officer said the investigations cover two alleged coup attempts in late 2023 and in October 2025.
Pereira, who leads the party that spearheaded the country’s independence struggle, was arrested on the day of the coup that brought General Horta Ntam to power. He was released on January 31 along with other opposition figures but placed under house arrest due to ongoing legal proceedings related to economic cases.
The case follows a military announcement on October 31 last year that it had foiled an attempt to “undermine the constitutional order,” coinciding with the launch of the campaign for the general elections held on November 23.
Testimonies from soldiers detained in December 2023 after an alleged coup attempt also suggested that Pereira may have financed the operation, according to an army staff officer.
Pereira was barred from the presidential race after submitting his candidacy papers beyond the legal deadline. He later declared his support for Fernando Dias, the main challenger to incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, in the November elections, whose results sparked widespread controversy.
