Africa-Press. The African Union has welcomed the return of Guinea to its ranks after nearly five years of suspended membership following a military coup. The AU Peace and Security Council confirmed Guinea’s reinstatement in the organization. In a statement, the Council said: “The Council decides to lift the suspension of the participation of the Republic of Guinea in the activities of the African Union, in accordance with Article 26 of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.”
Guinea’s membership had been suspended after the coup that overthrew civilian president Alpha Condé in September 2021. The reinstatement of the West African country came after the AU Peace and Security Council, during its 1325th meeting, reviewed the political transition process in Guinea, describing it as “highly successful.” On this basis, the Council called on Guinea to immediately resume its participation in the activities of the African Union.
The Council welcomed the positive steps taken in implementing Guinea’s political transition roadmap, which culminated in the successful organization of the presidential election on 28 December 2025.
It also praised the Guinean people for their strong commitment to strengthening democracy and the rule of law through peaceful and orderly elections, in which former junta leader Mamadi Doumbouya achieved a sweeping victory.
The Council further urged AU member states, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations, and other international partners to continue supporting Guinea in achieving stability and sustainable development.
