Kenya Tightens Security Measures after an Al-Shabaab Attack

Africa-Press. Kenyan police announced that a local chief and a teacher were killed in the Hulugho area in northeastern Kenya, near the Somali border, by fighters from the Somali group Al-Shabab. The police added that security measures in the area had been reinforced following the attack.

In a statement, the police said that a joint security team from several agencies was pursuing the attackers, adding that the area was now secure while operations continue. The statement urged the public to remain calm and vigilant and to cooperate with security authorities.

Al-Shabab, which controls large areas of southern and central Somalia, routinely carries out cross-border attacks on military and civilian targets in Kenya. Security analysts say these attacks aim to pressure Kenya into withdrawing its troops from peacekeeping missions in Somalia.

In June 2023, seven people were killed in two separate incidents in the same area. Police said at the time that they suspected Al-Shabab members of being behind one of the attacks.
