Africa. Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of recognition for Somaliland as a blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing that it is an action that is null and void both morally and legally.

Barre affirmed that this recognition has no legal effect, stressing that Somalia is an independent state with internationally recognized borders.

He also reiterated Somalia’s rejection, both from the government and the people, of Netanyahu’s so-called “reckless” stance, adding that it would be more appropriate for him to recognize the Palestinian state, which is under occupation, rather than interfere in Somalia’s affairs.

Geopolitical Ambitions in the Red Sea

The Somali Prime Minister warned of the geopolitical implications of the Israeli move, indicating that Israel seeks to establish a foothold in the Horn of Africa to control the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Barre explained that these ambitions include attempts to establish military bases, which pose a “serious precedent” threatening the security of Somali citizens and regional stability.

Regarding practical steps to counter this decision, Barre revealed that extensive diplomatic efforts have been undertaken by Mogadishu, including outreach to friendly and brotherly nations and international organizations.

He noted a growing international and regional consensus supporting Somalia’s position and rejecting Israeli violations of international law.

The Somali Prime Minister emphasized that his country has the full right to utilize all available legal mechanisms to defend its territorial integrity, asserting that Somalia will continue its diplomatic and legal efforts “to repel this aggression by all possible means.”

Concerning the U.S. position, Barre praised Washington’s announcement of its intention not to recognize the Somaliland region, clarifying that there is ongoing communication with the U.S. administration, which reaffirms its respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity.

He concluded by rejecting the stance of any country that supports Israel’s invalid recognition, stating: “I do not believe that any self-respecting nation would follow the Israeli entity in this rejected position.”

The Horn of Africa has long been a region of geopolitical interest due to its strategic location near key maritime routes. In recent years, various nations have sought to establish a presence in this area, often leading to tensions with local governments. Somalia, in particular, has faced challenges related to territorial integrity and international recognition, making it a focal point for diplomatic efforts and regional stability.
