Africa-Press. The Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto in Narok, located in the southwest of the country, to discuss regional security and strengthen bilateral relations.
This unannounced visit comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Horn of Africa, as the neighboring countries in East Africa seek to unify their strategies in maritime security and counter-terrorism.
The Somali presidency stated in a release following the high-level talks: “The presidents discussed enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation and joint efforts between Somalia and Kenya in maintaining peace, stability, and development in the region.”
Kenya is a key partner in Somalia’s security framework, contributing thousands of troops to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which is currently reducing its forces as Somali national troops gradually take on full security responsibilities.
Amid the complexities of regional relations, Nairobi and Mogadishu have increasingly sought to find common ground in areas such as cross-border trade, migration, and intelligence sharing to combat the ongoing threat posed by the armed group Al-Shabaab, which is linked to Al-Qaeda.
Diplomatic sources indicated that the choice of Narok, a prominent city near the world-renowned Maasai Mara reserve, provided a calm environment for the leaders to engage in candid and direct discussions about sensitive regional political developments.
