The Somali security forces have arrested nine members of a militant group, stating that they were involved in planning activities against security in the capital, Mogadishu, and surrounding areas, according to a local source.
The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency reported in a statement that these individuals were secretly present in the Garasbaley and Kahda areas, as well as neighborhoods in the Aylsha Biya region. The statement clarified that four of them formed an interconnected network planning to carry out terrorist acts targeting Somali citizens and threatening security and stability in the capital.
The agency added that its intelligence units had been closely monitoring the movements and plans of these individuals for some time, noting that after surveillance and information gathering, the forces were able to arrest each of them at their respective locations.
The statement indicated that the detainees are currently undergoing investigation, and they will later be referred to judicial authorities for legal action.
The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency expressed gratitude to the Somali citizens who continue to share information regarding security threats, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the safety of citizens.
The agency urged citizens to report any security threats or information related to the militant group or ISIS through its communication channels.
This development comes at a time when the Somali government faces increasing security challenges, as it has been fighting against the militant group since 2007 while still struggling to extend its control beyond the capital, Mogadishu.
Somalia has been suffering from fragile state institutions since the collapse of the central government in 1991 following the fall of the previous president, which allowed the group to expand its influence in vast areas outside major cities.
These developments coincide with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) preparing to leave the country amid growing concerns about the future of its operations after the announcement of the cessation of logistical support provided by the United Nations by the end of this year, which is essential for the continuation of the African force’s missions.
