Africa-Press. The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced that he will travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the outbreak of the Ebola virus accelerates beyond current response capabilities.

Tedros stated that “Congo has defeated Ebola 16 times in the past,” considering that confronting the current outbreak is also possible, but emphasized the need for immediate and coordinated action.

This move comes after a rise in suspected cases and deaths in eastern Congo and the spread of the virus to neighboring Uganda, coinciding with funding shortages and attacks on some health facilities that have hindered isolation and tracking operations.

The arrival of the Director of the World Health Organization marks a new development in the crisis and may aim to enhance international coordination and mobilize additional resources to respond to an outbreak that raises increasing regional concerns, according to a local source.
