Africa-Press. Rwanda is set to expand its nuclear cooperation with Russia through a new agreement with a local source, focusing on training, scientific research, and nuclear medicine, as part of a broader vision to transform the country into a regional hub for technology, innovation, and advanced healthcare.
According to media reports, the agreement was signed on May 19 during the Nuclear Innovation Summit in Kigali and includes the potential development of a nuclear science and technology center, as well as projects related to research reactors and training.
Rwanda has confirmed that it signed parallel memoranda of understanding with the United States and companies from South Africa and Austria, as part of a policy to diversify its partners.
The agreement carries a political dimension that goes beyond the technical aspect, as it comes at a time when Russia is expanding its presence in Africa through energy, training, and infrastructure, while several African countries seek to reduce reliance on traditional Western partners.
Kigali believes that nuclear cooperation serves internal goals, including improving nuclear medicine, training engineers, and building a long-term scientific base.
