Africa-Press. Military air movements by American forces in the skies over the Somaliland region have sparked widespread debate, following local reports of American aircraft flying at low altitudes over the coastal city of Berbera, an area considered one of the most strategically sensitive locations at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.
According to a local source, video recordings captured by residents showed military aircraft of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey type flying over the city, reigniting recurring questions about the nature of American military activity in the region.
These developments come at a time when Somaliland is witnessing notable diplomatic and military activity, following visits by delegations from the American leadership in Africa, where a high-ranking military delegation led by the commander met with the region’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, along with military leaders in Hargeisa.
Media reports suggest that these movements may be linked to discussions about establishing a potential American military facility in Berbera, located on one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, granting it strategic significance in monitoring maritime traffic in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
This development occurs amid increasing talk of deepening cooperation between Somaliland and various international parties, including reports of political and economic rapprochement with Israel, alongside discussions about mutual recognitions that have sparked widespread regional and international debate.
Additionally, the United States has reportedly been presented with a proposal to relocate some of its military bases from other areas in the Middle East to Somaliland, in exchange for a package of economic and investment privileges covering sectors such as mining and energy.
These proposals indicate the possibility of granting American companies investment rights in natural resources believed to exist in the region, including oil reserves estimated at around five billion barrels according to unofficial estimates.
Observers believe that Berbera’s geographical location gives it significant strategic weight, as it lies near one of the most important global maritime trade routes, making any military presence there a significant factor in the balance of power in the region extending from the Horn of Africa to Bab el Mandeb.
Conversely, these developments raise questions about their implications for the political situation in federal Somalia and the regional security balances in an area already experiencing increasing international competition over ports and maritime corridors.
