Africa-Press. The Nigerian Defense Minister Christopher Musa stated that the officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government lacked the capability or sufficient support to execute their plan, emphasizing that Nigerian citizens themselves were capable of thwarting them and foiling any coup attempt even without military intervention.
Musa made these remarks during a television interview with a local news channel, coinciding with the ongoing sessions of the military court trying several officers accused of involvement in the alleged coup plot revealed in October 2025.
The Defense Minister described the accused as “a group of confused individuals,” expressing his astonishment at the caliber of officers named in the investigations.
He noted that some of the implicated leaders misled junior officers and encouraged them to participate in what he deemed “a reckless adventure doomed to fail.”
Musa added that the plot had no chance of success, stating: “Even civilians in Nigeria would have confronted them and thwarted their attempt, thus what they did was an irresponsible and ill-considered act.”
At the same time, the minister expressed sympathy for the junior officers who found themselves involved in the case, indicating that they may have been influenced or exploited by higher-ranking military figures.
He clarified that the military institution is handling the matter according to the applicable legal procedures, allowing all accused individuals the full opportunity to defend themselves before the military court.
Musa confirmed that the investigations conducted by the relevant authorities were thorough and precise, noting that the prosecution process is still ongoing and that the evidence available is clear to the military authorities.
He added that all procedures are being conducted with complete transparency and without concealing any information related to the case.
The Defense Minister also stressed that there were no justifications for the officers to consider executing a military coup, affirming that the conditions of the armed forces have significantly improved in recent years. He stated that the current government has placed great emphasis on the welfare of military personnel, ensuring timely salaries, increasing allowances, and improving service conditions, alongside supporting forces deployed in various security operations within the country.
Musa defended the democratic system, considering it the best option for Nigeria compared to any military rule. He sent a message to young officers within the armed forces, warning them against engaging in any unconstitutional movements, asserting that experiences have proven that coups do not achieve stability nor serve the future of nations.
The Defense Minister had previously revealed that the roots of the conspiracy date back to a time before President Tinubu took office, and that one of the main drivers of the plot was a colonel who felt disgruntled after failing promotion exams to the rank of brigadier.
According to circulating information, Nigerian intelligence agencies, in collaboration with the army and the state security service, uncovered the plot in late September 2025 after a series of security investigations. The investigations later expanded to include searches and raids related to the case, including a search of the home of former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva in the capital Abuja.
After months of investigations, the military leadership officially announced the referral of the detained officers to a military court, a step that reaffirms the Nigerian authorities’ commitment to continuing legal proceedings against the accused, amid government assurances that the democratic system in the country remains stable and capable of facing any internal threats.
