Africa-Press. Amazon has confirmed that it plans to launch its satellite Internet service in South Africa this year, a move expected to enhance connectivity options and expand network access in areas still limited by weak infrastructure.

The announcement was made by Helen Kiiyoni, head of regulatory affairs for Amazon LEO in Sub-Saharan Africa, during hearings held by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa regarding the spectrum plan. Kiiyoni explained that the service will be delivered through licensed local partners, with availability expected later this year.

Amazon aims to integrate the service with fiber and mobile networks, especially in areas that are difficult or costly to reach via terrestrial infrastructure.

Rising Competition

This move comes as the satellite Internet market faces increasing competition. Amazon launched its first operational satellites in 2025, entering into direct competition with global providers such as SpaceX’s Starlink, which faces regulatory challenges in South Africa. Observers believe Amazon’s entry will add a strong competitor in expanding digital connectivity across the continent.

Amazon already has a significant presence in the country: in 2020, it opened its first cloud region in Cape Town, enabling local businesses and institutions to store data and run applications without relying on overseas servers. In 2024, it launched its local website, opening the door for sellers and consumers to engage with its commercial ecosystem.

Although South Africa is one of the most developed Internet markets in Africa, large areas still suffer from limited access. Satellite Internet could bridge this gap, particularly in rural communities, schools, and farms, while stimulating competition among providers and improving prices and service quality.
