Africa-Press. Turkey and Nigeria are moving towards enhancing cooperation in the shipbuilding industry through joint production and technology transfer, as part of Abuja’s plans to develop its local capabilities and modernize its maritime fleet.
The Nigerian government considers Turkey a “long-term strategic partner,” rather than just a supplier to meet the country’s ship needs.
The Nigerian Ministry of Marine Resources and Blue Economy has urged Turkish shipyards to view Nigeria as a “production base” that provides access to African markets, within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The cooperation is expected to include the manufacturing of specialized vessels and ferries, ship maintenance and repair, as well as the development of maritime infrastructure and enhancement of transport through inland waterways.
Nigeria believes that developing its capabilities in shipbuilding and maintenance can transform it into a regional hub serving West African markets.
Discussions are scheduled for today, Thursday, to align the capabilities of Turkish shipyards with Nigeria’s needs, followed by a session on August 5 to discuss financing and workforce. The general framework for the maritime cooperation roadmap between the two countries for 2027 is expected to be announced at the conclusion of the discussions.
