Africa-Press. Dozens of people have died in a landslide at a gold mine in Central Africa, near the border with Cameroon, according to local sources reported by a news agency on Wednesday.
A local official indicated that around 40 fatalities occurred in this incident at the artisanal gold mine in Zamboïe, located about 50 kilometers from the city of Bapaume, at the border between Central Africa and Cameroon. However, other local sources reported that the death toll could be at least 100.
The local official explained that rescue teams are continuing their efforts to search for other workers believed to be trapped under the rubble, noting that the chances of finding them alive “are gradually diminishing.”
Meanwhile, the deputy mayor of the sub-district, Suleiman B., stated that rescue teams and local residents have successfully retrieved 30 bodies from the collapsed mine over several hours, adding that the injured are receiving necessary medical care.
Landslides in Central African mines are frequent, as the region is rich in valuable resources that many seek to exploit, often illegally and without any state oversight.
In mid-June, a similar collapse resulted in dozens of deaths at a gold mine in Bémbarri, also located near the border with Cameroon.
