Africa-Press. Israeli President Isaac Herzog arrived in Addis Ababa early Wednesday for an official visit aimed at strengthening relations and bilateral cooperation between Israel and Ethiopia in various fields, according to a local source.
Herzog stated on his account on the platform “X,” “I just arrived in Addis Ababa for a visit to Ethiopia and look forward to a series of important meetings aimed at enhancing friendship and partnership.”
Herzog’s office noted that he will meet with his Ethiopian counterpart, Abiy Ahmed, and leaders of the local Jewish community.
The visit comes at a time when Israel is seeking to deepen its ties with Ethiopia to enhance its influence in Africa amid unprecedented international and regional competition.
About a week ago, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Ethiopia and emphasized his rejection of any unilateral recognition of Somaliland’s independence, stressing the need to avoid turning the Horn of Africa into a battleground for foreign powers.
Israel announced its recognition of Somaliland as an independent state in late December, which drew widespread regional and international condemnation.
In February 2025, Israel and Ethiopia signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in energy, water, and innovation, which included integrating Israeli companies into water infrastructure development projects, according to the Israeli Ministry of Energy.
Israel and Ethiopia have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with ties strengthening particularly in areas such as agriculture, technology, and security. In recent years, Israel has sought to expand its influence in Africa, viewing the continent as a key partner in various sectors, including energy and infrastructure development. This visit by President Herzog is part of a broader strategy to enhance Israel’s presence and partnerships in the region, especially in light of shifting geopolitical dynamics.
