Africa-Press. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, emphasizing the need to respect its political independence in accordance with the organization’s treaty, the African Union’s founding charter, and the United Nations Charter.
This statement comes in response to the opening of a Somaliland embassy in the occupied territories, following Israel’s recognition of the region as an independent state six months prior, making it the first country to do so.
The diplomatic mission was inaugurated in a technology complex in West Jerusalem during an official visit by the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, to the Israeli entity.
IGAD, in a statement issued by its General Secretariat in Djibouti, noted that it had reviewed reports regarding the opening of the Somaliland embassy in occupied Jerusalem, reiterating its steadfast position supporting the unity of Somalia and the integrity of its territories.
IGAD expressed concern over any actions or initiatives that could undermine Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, warning that such measures could contribute to increased tensions and undermine peace, stability, and cooperation efforts in the Horn of Africa region.
The organization called for restraint and respect for the principles concerning the sovereignty of states and the unity of their territories, which would contribute to maintaining regional security and stability.
Israel recognized the region as an independent sovereign state in December 2025, a move rejected by Somalia, which described it as a “deliberate attack” on its sovereignty.
The former British protectorate hopes that Israel’s recognition will encourage other countries to follow suit, thereby enhancing its diplomatic influence and expanding its access to international markets.
