Kenya Aviation Workers Union Plans Strike at Nairobi Airport

Africa-Press. The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has issued a notice giving the Civil Aviation Authority seven days to take urgent action to address what it describes as “chronic labor grievances.” In a statement, the union warned that main operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport could halt next week if unresolved collective bargaining agreements and employment issues are not addressed.

The union highlighted that more than 500 employees are still working under temporary contracts, despite meeting the requirements for permanent employment, adding that employment contracts have not been reviewed for 11 years, and management has refused any salary increases citing funding shortages.

Other issues raised include delays in confirming promotions, obstruction of career progression, and neglect of employee welfare programs. The union urged its members to prepare for a full strike if management does not respond within the specified period, warning that any work stoppage would disrupt flights and have wide-ranging effects on the aviation sector and the national economy.
