Africa-Press. The National Oil Corporation in Libya announced that the “Brega” fuel depot on the airport road in Tripoli was attacked by a drone, resulting in minor damage without any injuries or disruption to supply operations.
A spokesperson for the Brega Oil Marketing Company, Ahmed Al-Maslaty, stated that shrapnel from the attack caused limited damage to some pipes and tanks 213 and 220, confirming that the incident did not affect fuel distribution operations.
The Brega Company clarified that an object suspected to be a drone entered the airspace of the depot early Thursday and fell near one of the tanks. Specialized teams and security agencies began securing the site and taking necessary measures. The company confirmed that operations for production, distribution, and supply continue normally without interruption, and that scheduled orders for fuel stations were not affected by the incident.
The National Oil Corporation stated that technical teams began to withdraw part of the fuel from the tanks and reduce levels as a precautionary measure, and raised the state of readiness among emergency teams at oil sites. The corporation considered the targeting of oil facilities a “direct threat” to the fuel supply system and essential services, calling on security and military agencies to enhance protection for vital facilities.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, nor have Libyan authorities identified the party suspected of being behind the operation. The Brega Company has called for a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack and hold those responsible accountable.
This attack comes weeks after other oil facilities in western Libya were targeted. In August, fuel tanks at the Zawiya oil complex were subjected to several attacks by drones loaded with explosives, resulting in the complete destruction of one tank. Since 2011, Libyan oil facilities have faced a series of attacks, closures, and security and political disruptions, making the protection of energy infrastructure one of the major challenges facing the oil sector in the country.
