Africa. The police in South Africa announced that nine people were killed and ten others injured in an armed attack carried out by unknown assailants in the town of Bekkersdal, located about 40 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. The police have initiated a large-scale operation to pursue the attackers.

According to the police, unidentified gunmen randomly fired upon the victims in the streets of the town, noting that the motives behind the attack remain unknown. This incident marks the second mass shooting in the country this month.

The police, in a statement following a review of the casualty count, confirmed nine fatalities instead of the previously reported ten, stating that “some victims were randomly killed in the street by armed men whose identities have not yet been determined.”

The attack occurred near an informal tavern in Bekkersdal, a poor area located close to several major gold mines in the country. The injured have been transported to hospitals for treatment.

The police indicated that the site of the attack was being used for illegal alcohol sales.

Search for the Attackers

A wide-ranging search operation has been initiated by the Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit, in collaboration with the Crime Tracking Unit, to apprehend the gunmen responsible for the attack.

The police reported that the suspects, approximately twelve individuals, were traveling in a white minibus and a silver car.

This attack follows another shooting incident that occurred in the country on December 6, when gunmen stormed a lodge near the capital, Pretoria, killing twelve people, including a three-year-old child.

South Africa suffers from high crime rates and is among the countries with the highest murder rates in the world, despite a population of around 63 million.

South Africa has long struggled with high crime rates, particularly violent crime, making it one of the countries with the highest murder rates globally. The issue is exacerbated by socio-economic challenges, including poverty and unemployment, which contribute to the prevalence of crime. The recent surge in mass shootings has raised concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing these issues.
