Africa-Press. The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the “joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, Djibouti, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, Mauritania, Kuwait, Algeria, Morocco, Bangladesh, and Libya,” which condemned in the strongest terms the illegal and unacceptable step taken by the northwest region of the Federal Republic of Somalia, known as “Somaliland,” by opening what it calls an “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem.

The ministry confirmed in a statement that “such actions constitute a blatant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions, and represent a direct assault on the legal and historical status of occupied East Jerusalem,” specifically welcoming the ministers’ clear affirmation of their full support for the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and their firm rejection of any unilateral actions that undermine its territorial unity or infringe upon its sovereignty.

Israel became, at the end of 2025, the first country to recognize Somaliland as an “independent and sovereign state” since it declared independence from Somalia in 1991, which provoked anger in Mogadishu.

The appointed Somaliland ambassador to Israel, Mohamed Omar Haji Mahmoud, announced on May 19 that “the Embassy of the Republic of Somaliland will be in Jerusalem and will open its doors soon,” without providing further details.
