Africa-Press. The UN Office for Human Rights said violations committed by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their takeover of El Fasher rise to the level of “war crimes” and “possible crimes against humanity.”

A report by the UN office said that, “based on interviews with more than 140 victims and witnesses conducted in Sudan’s Northern State and eastern Chad in late 2025, the UN Office for Human Rights documented more than 6,000 deaths in the first three days of the RSF attack on the city, the capital of North Darfur, after 18 months of continuous siege.”

The report said “at least 4,400 people were killed inside El Fasher during those few days, and more than 1,600 others on the exit routes as they fled. The actual number of deaths during the week-long attack is certainly much higher.”

It concluded that “the RSF and allied militias carried out widespread attacks, including mass killings and summary executions, sexual violence, kidnappings for ransom, torture and ill-treatment, arrests, disappearances, looting, and the use of children in hostilities. In many cases, the attacks targeted civilians and people unable to fight based on their ethnic origin or alleged affiliations.”

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for credible and impartial investigations to establish criminal responsibility, including that of commanders and other senior officials, leading to genuine accountability for extremely serious crimes—through all available means—whether in fair and independent Sudanese courts, through universal jurisdiction beyond territorial borders in third countries, or before the International Criminal Court and other mechanisms.
