Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi is experiencing significant flight delays due to a strike by aviation workers. The dispute involves the workers’ union and the civil aviation authority over collective bargaining agreements. The airport has activated emergency plans and advised travelers to check with their airlines for updates.

Africa-Press. The Kenya Airports Authority announced that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi experienced flight delays on Monday due to a strike by aviation workers’ union members.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is one of the most important air transport hubs on the continent. The labor dispute between the aviation workers’ union and the civil aviation authority revolves around grievances, including the failure to reach a collective bargaining agreement.

Last week, the aviation workers’ union issued a seven-day strike notice, after which the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority sought court intervention to try to prevent the strike.

The Kenya Airports Authority stated that it has activated emergency plans at the airport and urged travelers to contact their airlines for the latest updates.

Moses Ndima, the union’s secretary-general, stated, “This is a total strike. I have not received any court order to stop the strike.” Kenya Airways (KQNA.NR) and Tanzania’s Precision Air (PAL.TZ) announced that air traffic control delays are affecting departures and arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Nairobi’s main airport is one of the busiest in the region, serving as a major gateway between Africa and the rest of the world. The airport welcomed nearly nine million passengers last year, according to Kenyan authorities.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is a key aviation hub in Africa, facilitating millions of passengers annually. Labor disputes in the aviation sector are not uncommon, often arising from disagreements over working conditions and compensation. The current strike highlights ongoing tensions between labor unions and management in the industry, reflecting broader challenges in labor relations across various sectors in Kenya.
