Regragui told a local source, “Hakimi will participate when he is 100 percent ready; he understands that.”
The coach of the “Atlas Lions” stressed the importance of Hakimi, who was awarded African Player of the Year this year, saying, “We will not take risks because we want to go far; we must not lose him due to recklessness. He is returning, and he is our leader.”
Morocco began its campaign in the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the opening match, which Hakimi watched from the bench. He presented the African Player of the Year award to the attending fans at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, which he received after his successes with his French team last season.
Hakimi contributed to Paris Saint-Germain’s first UEFA Champions League victory, alongside dominating the domestic titles in France.
The Moroccan defender suffered a serious injury during a match against Bayern Munich in November, sidelining him since then. His participation in the Africa Cup was in doubt, but he was included in Morocco’s squad.
Morocco, the top contender for the title, had a slow start against the promising Comoros team, waiting until the second half to score through Brahim Diaz, a winger for Real Madrid, before substitute striker Ayoub El Kaabi secured the win.
Regragui appeared optimistic after the match, stressing the need to correct some mistakes, stating, “We need to play patiently when facing any team that relies on a deep defense; the start was good, and the level will rise gradually.”
The Africa Cup of Nations is a prestigious tournament held every two years, showcasing the best of African football. Morocco, a strong contender, has a rich footballing history and has previously won the tournament in 1976. The current squad, featuring stars like Achraf Hakimi, aims to capitalize on home advantage to secure their second title.
