Africa. Pascal Ogouy Sifon, the former Minister of Tourism and Traditional Industries in Gabon, has been placed in the central prison in the capital, Libreville, following a judicial investigation session that lasted over 20 hours, according to a local source.
Sifon arrived at the Palace of Justice in Libreville on Wednesday at 4 PM, before leaving on Thursday at 2 PM under heavy guard to be transferred to prison, where he will remain in custody pending the completion of judicial procedures.
Judicial sources indicate that the former minister faces charges of embezzling over 10 billion CFA francs, which were allocated to support and promote the tourism sector.
Investigations revealed that the questionable funds originated from the state budget, as well as revenues from hotel establishments placed under government oversight, in addition to allocations intended for various investments.
Sifon had previously been under house arrest during his tenure before being formally detained.
Involvement of Other Figures
The case does not solely involve the former minister, as it includes 16 individuals, including several members of his ministerial office. Authorities have identified serious violations in the management of resources allocated for revitalizing the tourism sector, which is one of the cornerstones of the national economic diversification plans.
