Ivory Coast PM Discusses Electoral Commission

Africa-Press. After more than six weeks since the dissolution of the independent electoral commission, the Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Robert Beugré Mambe, held a meeting with political parties, during which he presented details of the new electoral system that the government intends to submit to parliament soon.

Mambe explained that the new project was prepared by a team of experts based on electoral experiences implemented in several West African countries, aimed at enhancing trust in the electoral process and improving transparency and integrity.

The proposed system is based on three independent bodies: the first will handle the logistical and organizational aspects of the elections, the second will be responsible for counting the votes and announcing the results to ensure their accuracy and credibility, while the third body will oversee and monitor all stages of the electoral process.

The Prime Minister emphasized during the meeting, attended by government members and representatives from various political parties, that building trust at every stage of the electoral process is a fundamental priority, noting that the new legal framework will soon be presented to the National Assembly for approval.

The meeting saw the absence of the African People’s Party – Ivory Coast (PPA-CI) led by former President Laurent Gbagbo, while other opposition parties expressed their support for the principles underlying the project, particularly regarding neutrality and transparency in managing elections.

Georges Ezaley, a member of the political bureau of the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast, welcomed the government initiative, describing it as a positive and noteworthy step, but stressed that political parties expect to see these principles implemented effectively in practice, asserting that the success of the reforms will be judged by their practical implementation rather than mere announcements.
