The meeting focused on bilateral relations and the aftermath of the recent cyclones that struck the island, resulting in over 40 fatalities and affecting approximately 270,000 people.
At the beginning of the meeting, Putin expressed his condolences to the visiting president, praising the efforts of the Malagasy government in dealing with the effects of the natural disaster. He emphasized the broad prospects for enhancing bilateral relations, both politically and through high-level delegation exchanges, referencing a recent Malagasy delegation’s visit to Moscow.
For his part, Randrianirina expressed his gratitude for Putin’s invitation, confirming that his country is going through a difficult phase following the cyclones and that it looks forward to Russia’s support in overcoming the disaster’s impacts. He stated, “We hope to rely on your support during this critical period for Madagascar.”
This meeting comes amid the expansion of Russian presence in Africa in recent years, as Moscow seeks to enhance its influence through various means, including military and political cooperation, as well as what is described as “soft power.” This trend is particularly evident in the Sahel region, which is experiencing increasing international competition for influence and resources.
