Africa-Press. The ruling party in Guinea, the Movement for a Generation of Modernity and Development, has achieved a sweeping victory in the legislative and municipal elections, according to preliminary results.
The Movement for a Generation of Modernity and Development is the ruling party in Guinea (Conakry) and supports President Mamadi Doumbouya, which provides a significant political boost to the transitional authority in its path to returning to constitutional order after the military took power in 2021.
The General Directorate of Elections announced on Thursday the preliminary results of the vote that took place on May 31, confirming that the ruling party secured a wide majority in electoral districts both inside and outside the country, and dominated most municipal councils.
According to the electoral authority, the number of registered voters reached 6,948,894, distributed across 50 electoral districts, 375 municipalities, and 36 diplomatic missions abroad.
A total of 3,741,573 voters participated in the electoral process, with a turnout rate of 52.87% in the legislative elections, while the municipal elections recorded a higher participation rate of 58.51%.
The elections were conducted through 23,619 polling stations and 16,735 voting centers, with the number of valid votes totaling 3,448,994.
The results showed a clear dominance of the Movement for a Generation of Modernity and Development over the upcoming National Assembly seats, which total 147, as it won the vast majority of seats allocated for single and multi-member districts.
The party achieved significant victories in key electoral districts, including Conakry through the Dixinn, Kaloum, Lambanyi, Matoto, and Ratoma districts, as well as in Dubreka, Kindia, Labe, Kankan, Nzerekore, and other major areas.
The competing parties managed only limited breakthroughs, with the Osuns party winning a seat in the Matam district, the Frondg party winning a seat in Kindara, and the Guinea New Future party securing a seat in Bissia.
In contrast, the seats allocated for the national list, totaling 49, saw a notable presence of opposition parties.
The Union for a Popular Movement topped the results with 636,900 votes and 9 seats, benefiting from its electoral alliance with the Movement for a Generation of Modernity and Development.
Both the New Beginning party and the Guinean Gathering for Labor party secured 7 seats each, while the Forces of Integrity for Democracy and Freedom obtained 6 seats, the Union for Democracy and Development received 5 seats, and the Front for National Alliance gained 2 seats.
Several other parties shared the remaining seats, with one seat each, ensuring representation of various political forces in the upcoming parliament despite the ruling party’s dominance.
These elections represent an important milestone in the transitional phase led by the military authorities since the ousting of President Alpha Conde in September 2021.
The announced results remain provisional, as the General Directorate of Elections has referred the files to the Supreme Court to consider potential appeals and complaints before the final announcement of the official composition of the National Assembly and the new local councils.
